What is Facelift?

Facelift surgery is a popular aesthetic procedure designed to treat wrinkles, sagging skin, and other signs of aging in the face and upper neck for a rejuvenated and revitalized appearance. When performed skillfully by an experienced plastic surgeon, facelift results can look completely natural—enabling you to appear like a younger, more rested and refreshed version of yourself.

A facelift performed with the most advanced techniques can tremendously rejuvenate self-esteem and confidence. Facelift surgery restores what you see in the mirror to be more in line with your innate sense of youthfulness.

Benefits of a Facelift Surgery

The ultimate goal of any facelift is to address signs of aging without leaving an unnaturally tightened face. A facelift surgery offers comprehensive rejuvenation by tightening loose skin, repositioning deeper tissues, and smoothing deep wrinkles. Patients often look 7–10 years younger, and modern techniques like the Deep Plane facelift can provide results that last up to 15 years.

  • Tightening and lifting the facial skin
  • Removing excess skin
  • Smoothing deep lines and wrinkles
  • Restoring the underlying muscle
  • Creating a refreshed and more youthful appearance

Types of Facelifts

A facelift is a cosmetic procedure that targets the effects of aging and gravity to lift and support fallen cheeks, jowls, and neck skin and muscles. This facial rejuvenation process suspends the platysma muscle to redefine the jawline and neck.

Am I a Candidate?

You might be a good candidate for a facelift if you’re noticing:
  • Diminished facial volume and/or neck definition
  • Loss of collagen and skin elasticity
  • Wrinkles, lines, deep folds, or jowls
  • Loose or hanging skin, sagging cheeks
  • Stubborn facial fat

A full facelift (traditional facelift) is a comprehensive surgical procedure that addresses advanced signs of aging by tightening deeper tissues, lifting muscles, and removing excess skin in the mid-face, jawline, and neck. It offers a significant, long-lasting rejuvenation, usually targeting the lower two-thirds of the face to correct sagging skin, jowls, and neck laxity.
A deep plane facelift is an advanced, surgical rejuvenation technique that repositions the deeper facial tissues and muscles beneath the SMAS layer, rather than just pulling the skin. This method addresses sagging in the midface, jawline, and neck to provide a natural, long-lasting look that avoids a "tight" or "windblown" appearance.
Key Advantages of a Deep Plane Facelift
  • More Natural Results
  • Longer-Lasting, Enduring Results
  • Significant Improvement in Jawline & Neck
  • Effectively Addresses Advanced Signs of Aging
  • Minimal Skin Tension
A mini facelift is an excellent cosmetic procedure to address early signs of aging. The mini facelift procedure is primarily used to address the signs of aging along the jawline and mid-face. As such, the mini procedure requires a smaller incision than the incision used for a regular facelift.

How the Procedure Works

A facelift (rhytidectomy) in Montreal is an outpatient surgical procedure aimed at tightening the muscles, removing excess fat, and redraping the skin to reverse signs of aging. Procedures typically last 3 to 4 hours and are performed under local or general anesthesia.

The procedure is highly customizable and typically involves several sequential steps:

  • Anesthesia: You will receive either general anesthesia or IV sedation combined with local numbing to ensure your comfort.
  • Incisions: Dr Alam will make discreet incisions hidden within your hairline, in the natural contours around the ears, and sometimes under the chin.
  • Tissue Repositioning: Rather than just pulling the skin, surgeons tighten the underlying fibrous/muscle layer known as the SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System). Advanced techniques like the deep plane facelift release the facial retaining ligaments to reposition the tissue pads.
  • Skin Redraping: Excess skin is conservatively trimmed, and the remaining skin is draped smoothly over your rejuvenated framework without tension.
  • Closure & Recovery: Incisions are closed with sutures. You will wear a supportive dressing and typically return home the same day.

Facelift Recovery Timeline & Aftercare

  • Days 1–5 (Initial Healing): Swelling and bruising peak, often worst around days 4–5. Drains and bandages are usually removed in 1–2 days.
  • Days 5–10 (Stitch Removal): Sutures or staples are removed, and patients can often begin showering normally.
  • Weeks 2–3 (Returning to Activity): Most swelling and bruising fade, allowing for a return to work and light activities. Social activities can resume.
  • Weeks 3–4 (Exercise): Light exercise can start; however, intense exercise should wait until about 4 weeks post-op.
  • 1–3 Months (Final Settlement): Final swelling subsides, and the face feels less tight. Residual numbness or minor swelling may persist for up to 6 months to a year.
